盐湖城冬奥会开创性引进了录像回放技术。

2002盐湖城冬奥会，赛会首次在花样滑冰比赛项目中启用了即时回放技术。当年双人滑项目中爆出的裁判丑闻直接导致了国际滑联在后来废除了原本的6.0打分系统，改用更为客观的花样滑冰国际裁判系统。

在这套新打分体系之下，将有一名专门的“技术专家”使用即时回放系统来确认并评估选手的技术动作及完成度（诸如选手在冰上起跳及落地时的精确位置）。在必要情况下，裁判可以重新观看录像确认技术动作并完成最终打分。

盐湖城冬奥会的基本情况：

共有来自77个国家和地区的共2399名运动员参加了本届盛会，夺取金牌的选手来自多达18个代表团，创造了历史最高纪录。本届冬奥会的设项增加到7个大项15个分项78个小项，新增加的两个项目是骨架雪橇和女子雪车两个大项目。
